Leaders who oppress their citizens finally pay for their actions. Write an essay in support of this assertion basing your illustrations on Adipo Sidang’s Parliament of Owls

In many societies, those in power tend to ill-treat the same people who elected them. However, they eventually face the consequences of their deeds. Money Bags owl and Royal owl are such characters in Adipo Sidang’s play Parliament of Owls.

Money bags extorts money from day birds with the introduction of the Moonlight Bill .Birds are expected to pay ‘Moonlight Tax’ to cater for the longer supervising hours and to help the parliament protect the kingdom.

Money Bag sponsors ‘Moonlight Bill’ which limits the day birds from twittering and flying from tree to tree past 6; 00PM

Day birds will no longer sing for their young ones. They are also have to register their eggs with Olik Tiga, a ploy to steal their eggs. At the end, Money Bags is sentenced to life imprisonment (pg.122) Indeed Money Bags, faces imprisonment for oppressing the birds and acting in favor of the owls.

Money Bags, through puppet owls kills Arum Tidi. Arum Tidi has been trying hard to please Money bag but is killed after he is heard singing the freedom song thus acting against the interests of the Royal Trees. Little P says that she had gathered that Arum Tidi had a damning decision on a serious scandal which implicates Money Bags and Royal Trees (pg.69) Moreover, Tel Tel says that Money Bags never forgets and never forgives (pg.64)

That Arum Tidi’s death was personal as Arum Tidi had leaked confidential information to the parrots about a secret activity within the kingdom. This infuriated Money Bags. Later on, Money Bags was ditched by Royal owl and he is stripped off his power.

Oyundi is arrested when she is reported to have had a secret meeting with Ogila the hare. They are afraid that she is behind the demonstrations against the oppressive rule of the owls.

Tel tel is arrested when she refuses to spread propaganda about the “Moonlight Bill” to the day birds (pg.84)

Birds are killed during the weaver massacre. Ironically, Money Bag ends up facing lifetime imprisonment.

The day birds are denied their rights with the gagging of opposition to the owl government. This is the only voice which, in any way, tries to air dissenting voice which does not necessarily include the grievances of the day birds.

The rebel owls which attempt to seek a fair society are silenced in many ways. Money Bags buys any of them ready to be brought. The rebel owls are harassed and thrown out of the parliament while passing the Moonlight Bill to ensure that the bill passes.

In conclusion, birds like Money Bags, The puppet and the royal owls use their power to subjugate the day birds as they are small and seem to be without any power against the night birds.
