Change can be initiated through the efforts of ordinary citizens. Using Nicole, justify this statement.

In The Samaritan by John Lara, Nicole, a simple ethics and innovation teacher, demonstrates that ordinary individuals can trigger significant social change. Through mentoring innovation, resisting intimidation, exposing corruption, and inspiring civic responsibility.

To begin with, Nicole initiates change by mentoring students who develop the Samaritan App. As the teacher in charge of ethics and innovation at Sagrada Secondary School, she guides her students, Alvita and Montano, to refine their idea of a digital platform that allows citizens to report corruption, environmental degradation, and misuse of public resources. Through the app, citizens can upload photos and videos exposing illegal activities and poor governance. This innovation empowers ordinary people to participate in governance and accountability. The app is later endorsed by experts and government authorities, proving that Nicole’s guidance plays a critical role in initiating change within Maracas Municipality.

Nicole also demonstrates that ordinary citizens can initiate change by courageously resisting intimidation from powerful leaders. When Mayor Mossi orders her to stop the Samaritan App and write a letter to the Ministry of Education claiming the app has fundamental errors, Nicole firmly refuses. She insists that the app has already been approved by experts and refuses to compromise her principles even when Mossi threatens her and points his walking stick at her. Her courage shows that moral conviction can challenge abuse of power. Eventually, Mossi’s attempts to suppress the app fail and his corrupt dealings are exposed.

Furthermore, Nicole contributes to change by exposing corruption in the municipality. Information shared through the Samaritan App reveals widespread corruption among municipal officials such as Mossi, Bembe, Seymour, and Ted. The revelations attract the attention of the media, which publishes damaging stories about the misuse of public resources, land grabbing, bribery, and environmental destruction. Public outrage grows, forcing authorities to investigate and arrest the corrupt leaders. Through Nicole’s initiative, the hidden rot within the municipality is brought to light, demonstrating how an ordinary citizen can trigger accountability and reform.

Nicole’s determination also inspires solidarity and public support among ordinary citizens. When Inspector Bembe falsely accuses her of stealing a school generator and arrests her, thousands of people gather outside the court in solidarity. The public protest demonstrates that Nicole’s efforts have awakened civic consciousness among citizens. This collective support weakens the corrupt officials’ attempts to silence her and ultimately leads to the arrest of those responsible for corruption and abuse of power. Thus, Nicole’s courage inspires others to stand against injustice.

In addition, Nicole initiates long-term change through education and moral guidance. As a teacher, she constantly emphasizes values such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, and courage. She encourages her students to emulate the Good Samaritan by standing up for what is right and helping others. By shaping the moral character of young people, Nicole nurtures a generation that is aware of its civic duty and willing to challenge wrongdoing. Through this role as an educator, she plants the seeds for sustainable social transformation.

In conclusion, Nicole demonstrates that one determined individual can inspire widespread transformation. The play therefore emphasizes that meaningful change does not always begin with those in power; it can start with ordinary citizens who have the courage to stand for truth and justice.
