Dishonest People Try to Hide Their Misdeeds but Eventually Face Consequences — With Reference to The Samaritan

In The Samaritan, many leaders in Maracas Municipality engage in wrongdoing, yet they try to hide their misdeeds when the Samaritan App begins exposing their actions. Despite their efforts to avoid punishment, the truth eventually comes out and they suffer. This is especially clear in the cases of Mayor Mossi, Inspector Bembe, Justice Jaden, Seymour, Ted, and Ramdaye.

Mayor Mossi is accused of municipal capture, inflating project costs, misuse of office, and presiding over shoddy municipal works. When the truth begins to surface, he refuses to launch the Samaritan App and tries to block its use, claiming it will cause problems . He orders Harvester to buy damaging newspapers using public funds, plans to hold press conferences, and supports a ban on the app to suppress negative information .Mossi even offers a bribe and a top council position to Nicole if she deletes posts exposing him and threatens her when she refuses. He attempts to persuade Nicole to delete all negative information about him on the app and tries to spin the situation by blaming others and promising reforms. Ultimately, Mossi is arrested by the National Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau, losing power and dignity — proving that hiding misdeeds cannot save him.

Inspector Bembe commits corruption, violation of human rights, extortion, and abuse of police power. He owns a Madigo Golf Club and house built on public land and uses his officers to collect bribes, turning the police force into his personal outfit . To avoid punishment, he suggests threatening reporters, banning the Samaritan App, and arrests Nicole on trumped-up charges — accusing her of stealing the school generator and being at a murder scene .When intimidation fails, he tries to apologize and lure Nicole with a job offer . Psychologically, he experiences horror and stress when people demand answers about his illegal house and club; physically, he staggers and fears prison due to his diabetes before being arrested and handcuffed.

Justice Jaden is corruptly involved in business and biased rulings, including in cases involving his own company and that of his mistress Ivy. He tries to avoid punishment by proposing double jeopardy (starting prosecution first to prevent others from charging him. He offers to use his influence to delay court proceedings and shield other officials. However, Jaden suffers hallucinations (seeing rats and rodents) and severe nausea and stomach ulcers when the truth about his corruption emerges. He also crouches under a table when confronted by anti-corruption officials, and is eventually arrested, showing that even strategic schemers cannot escape their misdeeds.

Seymour, the Secretary for Planning and Development, engages in fraudulent contracts — including billing for supplying air (charging for services not rendered), delaying approvals unless bribed, and misusing public funds .To avoid punishment, Seymour pushes for reallocation of the municipal budget under false pretenses to use funds to fight investigations . He also proposes bribing witnesses and suppressing information by paying people posting on the app and backs the idea of banning the Samaritan App. Despite these schemes, his corruption is exposed in media and on the app, and he is arrested, suffering confusion and shame.

Ted is involved in corrupt deals, including fraud and failures in essential services like healthcare and environmental management. His companies, along with friends and family, unfairly win tenders and provide no actual services, harming citizens .To avoid punishment, he conspires with Seymour, Ramdaye and Basdeo to suppress exposure and delay investigations. However, his illegal activities are revealed, and he suffers legal consequences, losing authority and facing arrest.

Ramdaye, the Deputy Mayor, swindles the municipality by selling public land — even printing fake deeds to sell a single plot to multiple buyers — and misappropriates funds for infrastructure projects that end up shoddy. To avoid punishment, he supports propaganda to discredit the Samaritan App and denies wrongdoing, but his lies collapse when evidence is publicized. He is arrested, loses status, and faces humiliation, showing that property fraud and deceit also attract consequences.

In conclusion, dishonest people may try to hide their misdeeds through manipulation and deception, but when the truth comes out, they face consequences.
