Human beings are pretentious and hypocritical in nature and will act in a manner that may seem to please other people even when their real intentions may be hidden as seen in different characters in the short story ‘ The Truly Married Woman’.

Pi-Ayo

-She hides the calendars that had displays of lightly dressed women and replaces them with family photos when she is told that they are expecting visitors.

-She replaces magazines with religious books since the visitors are religious people.

-She borrows a wedding ring to give the impression that she was a Christian wife who had done a wedding’ all this is meant to please the visiting missionaries.

-Once she gets married in church by Ajayi, she changes: becomes rebellious to her husband. For 12 years, Ayoo has been submissive to Ajayi, she has served him well and has always had his well-prepared morning tea. However, all this is just a show and she shows her true colours when they are finally married. She doesn’t make the customary tea and when Ajayi asks why, she says she is now a truly married woman and that her husband should treat her with more respect.

Pii-The watchmen

-They spend the whole night sleeping then loudly bang the locks of shops and houses in the morning so that their employers think they had been working.

-They spend the time they should be working on resting and only want to give the impression that they had been busy at work.

Piii-Ajayi

-He decides to marry ayoo, not out of love, but it is so that the missionaries from America can see them as ‘one-God loving and happy african family’

- This is because the missionaries had taken a photo of their family for the WGCA magazine. He only cares about the impression he will have on the americans and not what the wedding means to his family.

- visits the soothsayer to influence the feedback he would give Ayo on life after marriage

Piv – The sooth sayer

-He predicts a happy marriage when Ajayi and his sister pay a visit. He does this, not because the marriage would be happy, but because Ayo had visited earlier to fix things after she had heard the plans of ajayis sister. He therefore only says that to please ajayi who is excited for his wedding.

Conclusion

We should not judge a book by its cover as what we see, is not necessarily what we get.

(accept any other valid conclusion)
