Analysis of The Moonlight Law and its impact on the birds

 In the book "Parliament of Owls," the Moonlight Law emerges as a pivotal piece of legislation reflecting the power dynamics and injustices within the bird kingdom. Influenced by leaders like Money Bags and Royal Owl, the Parliament of Owls enacts laws that primarily benefit owls while adversely affecting other bird species (pg. 1, 5, 30, 32). Osongo notes the hypocrisy where owls break the rules they impose on others (pg. 1), while Red String exploits his position as advisor to circumvent regulations (pg. 5).


The Moonlight Law specifically bans activities like moonlight twittering and night-time movements for non-owls after 6 p.m., mandating all birds to sleep by sunset (pg. 21). Notably, owls exempt themselves from these restrictions, illustrating their privileged status above the laws they enforce (pg. 7). Additionally, the law introduces unfair taxes during a period of impending hunger among birds, justified as necessary for kingdom protection (pg. 33).


Tel Tel is tasked with deceiving birds into supporting the Moonlight Law by fabricating imminent threats to the kingdom's safety (pg. 7-8, 10). When Tel Tel refuses, Red String resorts to blackmail and threats to enforce compliance (pg. 10, 14-15). In parliament, dissent from figures like Iron Lady and Feathered Beak is stifled by Money Bags and Socialite Owl, who manipulate proceedings to swiftly pass the law (pg. 29-32).Red String reminds all birds to adhere  to the Moonlight Law.Any bird that breaks this law shall be arrested (p74).


Iron Lady exposes the law as a scheme by Money Bags to divert funds for personal gain, labeling it as theft and robbery sanctioned by parliament (pg. 34). Following the law's enactment, Money Bags seeks further control over the bird kingdom, only to be confronted in a dream by Oyundi, who assures him of the law's imminent downfall (pg. 49, 52). Subsequently, Money Bags meets his demise, and owls are expelled from parliament amidst protests against the Moonlight Law (pg. 31, 46).


In conclusion, the Moonlight Law exemplifies the abuse of power and inequality within the bird kingdom, sparking public outrage and resistance against discriminatory legislation. It serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of unchecked authority and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality among bird species (pg. 121, 124, 125).

 When power is misused by those in authority to advance their agenda and for self gain it leads to widespread problems for  the society. This essay will explore how Sidang highlights the negative effects of authority when it is misused, focusing on the impact on both individuals and the community.
